BBC Radio 5 Live's Mark Kermode said of the film: "One of the things that it manages to do is, firstly, make all the dialogue and the language completely comprehensible". He proceeded to note that "it makes sense to its audience. I think that the comedy is funny, and I don't say that lightly. ... And finally, I think in terms of the way in which it deals with that gender politics issue is really well done. ... It's a very hard trick to pull off, and he did it in two weeks!

TITUS 1999 by Julie Taymor
Stephen Holden of The New York Times gave the film a positive review, making it a "Critic's Pick".[12] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times also praised Titus and gave it three and a half out of four stars, referring to the source material as "the least of Shakespeare's tragedies" and concluding, "Anyone who doesn't enjoy this film for what it is must explain: How could it be more? This is the film Shakespeare's play deserves, and perhaps even a little more.

Twelfth Night 1996 by Trevor Nunn
For all that has been thrown out, reduced and tacked on, this ''Twelfth Night'' is deeper than most in the way it confronts the psychological forces seething behind the conventional facades of masculine and feminine. It fully recognizes the genius of the play as its comic understanding of the degree to which desire (the more frustrated the better), and not love, is what makes the world go around.
